Fresh Meat - Rookie Running Backs

Daniel Thomas, Dolphins –
I really liked Daniel Thomas’ chances to be a success in Miami’s run first and try not to pass style of offense. Now that Reggie Bush tweeted his way out of the Big Easy and took his talents all the way to South Beach I LOVE his chances to succeed. Miami thrives on pounding the ball down the middle and then bouncing it outside. Okay, you’re right, they don’t thrive on anything but still it’s good for their RBs. Reggie will continue to do what he did in New Orleans and I don’t think anyone can say it hurt Pierre Thomas or Chris Ivory during their stint with him. Thomas was a stud at Kent State averaging over 5 yards per carry each year. He also has the ability to catch the ball out of the backfield and make something happen.

Roy Helu, Redskins –
Helu was selected out of Nebraska where he averaged over 6 yards every time he toted the rock.  Helu will probably not see very much contention for his spot at RB this year. Torain has been ruled out for anywhere from 7 -10 weeks with an injury that will force him under the knife. Hightower moved into the capital city this offseason but appears to have left his grip in Arizona. Reports have stated that Hightower has a case of fumblitis in training camp this year and Shanahan in not pleased.  Helu is a back who can get it done for the Skins but with the Tyrannosaurus Wreck (aka Rex Grossman) being named the starter at QB expect defenses to stack the box tighter than Haynesworth’s pants.

Mark Ingram, Saints –
Mark Ingram enters into an absolute great situation for him career-wise but not such a great spot to be a fantasy stud. Ingram will have to share with current doctor patients Pierre Thomas (ankle) and Chris Ivory (sports hernia) as well as Bush’s replacement, Darren Sproles. While we saw guys like Thomas and Ivory have a lot of value for fantasy owners in this system it is hard to imagine that throwing another powerful set of legs to the mix will allow of anyone to succeed. If Ivory or Thomas show signs that they won’t be ready to go week 1 or one of them happens to get injured Ingram could become a great asset. But in a four running back set he’s not worth much more than a late round pick and a prayer.

Ryan Williams, Cardinals –
The addition of Kevin Kolb to the Cardinals has to make you like the selection of Ryan Williams at running back. Tim Hightower was shipped out and Chris Beanie Well is looking less and less like the man who ran for the Ohio State University (a bust prospect from OSU is shocking, I know).  At this moment in time LaRod Stephens-Howling appears to be the only threat and I wouldn’t be worried about that guy. Williams is probably in the best situation to have success because no one else on the team can really run the ball and, for the first time since the one-gloved wonder, Kurt Warner, left town, the Cards can finally throw the ball around.
Mike Leshoure, Lions –
I had a lot to say about the success I thought this guy would have in one of the youngest up and coming offensive attacks the league has right now. But he went and tore his Achilles in practice yesterday. Maybe next year bud. (In his absence keep an eye on Jerome Harrison)

----
Those are really the only running backs I see having any true fantasy value this year barring some apocalyptic disaster  where Brady and half of NE all catch polio and Shane Vereen is put front and center. But let me give a quick shout out to a guy drafted by the Baltimore Ravens this year. Anthony Allen, the running back from Georgia Tech (and more importantly Jesuit High School), and his dreadlocks will be making headlines on a Sunday to be named later. You heard it here first.
